COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Henry Dale Smith Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of H.D. Smith Holding Co., has received the 2016 Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement from the HDA Research Foundation.

Smith was presented the award, the pharmaceutical distribution industry’s highest individual honor, at the Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) 2016 Business and Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs. Also presenting the award to Smith were sponsors Genentech Inc. and Mylan Inc.

“On the 60th anniversary of the Nexus Award, we are thrilled to celebrate Dale, whose vision has had an enormous impact on not only his company, but on HDA and the distribution industry as a whole,” HDA president and CEO John Gray said in a statement.

“The HDA Research Foundation is pleased to recognize him with the industry’s most prestigious award,” added Gray, who’s also president of the HDA Research Foundation. Earlier this week, the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) announced that it has changed its name to the Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) and its research foundation, formerly the Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research, is now called the HDA Research Foundation.

Smith, who heads the parent company of pharmaceutical wholesaler H.D. Smith, follows in the footsteps of his father, Henry Dale Smith Sr., and longtime H.D. Smith colleague Joseph Conda, who were Nexus Award honorees in 2003 and 1998, respectively.

“Mylan is pleased to be a first-time sponsor of the Nexus Award, a longtime symbol of excellence in the health care distribution industry,” commented Robert Potter, senior vice president of North American national accounts and channel development at Mylan. “Dale is a shining example of the values this award embodies.”

H.D. Smith Jr. began his career at H.D. Smith in 1974, performing functions in nearly all of the company’s departments, from accounting to warehouse operations and delivery. He also concurrently served as vice chairman and president of J M Smith Corp. in the 1990s, which was founded by his grandfather.

Smith is a co-founder of Wholesale Alliance LLC, a cooperative aimed at helping pharmacies provide critical services. He chaired that organization from 1997 until 2005. Recently, he spearheaded a joint venture between H.D. Smith and American Associated Pharmacies to form Arete Pharmacy Network, a new PSAO, and serves as chairman. Smith is an active HDA member and has served on the organization’s board of directors and executive committee since October 2011.

“Genentech is proud to support the 2016 Nexus Award, continuing the tradition of celebrating the individuals who have shaped the future of the health care distribution industry,” stated James Reilly, vice president of access and channel management at Genentech and HDA Research Foundation vice chairman. “We congratulate Dale on this prestigious honor.”
