ORLANDO, Fla. — Health Mart, a franchise of more than 3,200 independently owned pharmacies across the country, has kicked off its 2014 Healthy Living Tour of more than 130 communities.

The mobile screening vehicle pulled up at the Pharmacy Development Service’s Independent Pharmacy Business Growth Conference here, the first stop on a journey across the country. The aim is to provide health education and free health screenings.

Sponsored by Health Mart Pharmacy, the tour also aims to help identify people at risk for a variety of conditions that can be managed better with a pharmacist’s help. During the tour Health Mart will award 10 pharmacists the “Health Mart Community Care Excellence Award” for providing exemplary care and services that add value to patient health care and community wellness.

This year’s tour will go beyond the traditional focus on diabetes and, at each stop, complimentary screenings will be offered for the following: diabetes screening (blood glucose and additional HbA1c tests for those deemed “at risk” for diabetes) — participants must be at least 18 years of age; blood pressure screening — participants must be at least 18; total cholesterol screening — participants must be at least 20 years of age; obesity screening (body mass index, waist circumference, body composition) — participants must be at least 6 years old.

“Community pharmacists play an important role in their local area by providing broader access to clinical services and medication counseling, which can help patients better manage a variety of health conditions,” said Steve Courtman, Health Mart’s president.

“Health Mart is committed to improving patient care, and the Healthy Living Tour expands the ability of Health Mart pharmacists to work with their patients as an integral member of the health care team.”
