BOCA RATON, Fla. — IM HealthScience (IMH) has expanded availability of its IBgard medical food for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to Rite Aid drug stores nationwide.

IBgard_IM Health ScienceIMH said that Rite Aid stores will stock IBgard in 12-capsule and 48-capsule boxes. The move builds on the product’s retail distribution in the digestive products aisle at most most CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens stores across the country.

“IBgard continues to deliver high levels of patient satisfaction and value to our new and existing customers,” stated Ellen Geisel, president of IMH. “We are pleased to expand distribution of IBgard to even more retail drug stores nationwide and to continue delivering a higher level of care in communities across the nation.”

IBgard capsules contain L-menthol, the principal component in peppermint oil, which has been shown to have significant impact on the management of IBS symptoms, especially abdominal pain, in as soon as 24 hours, according to IMH. The company said that in multiple clinical studies, peppermint oil has been shown to provide relief from IBS symptoms.

With IMH’s patented SST technology, IBgard capsules release Ultramen, an ultra-purified peppermint oil, in the small intestine. Peppermint oil can help normalize the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients, which have been compromised by IBS. Peppermint oil has also been shown to normalize intestinal transit time, the company said.

“IBgard is a product that has generated excitement and growth at the retail level,” Geisel added. “We’re offering individuals a unique, nonprescription IBS option that is effective, well-tolerated and affordable.”

IMH noted that IBgard should be used under medical supervision, even though the product is over-the-counter. The usual adult dose is one to two capsules as needed, up to three times a day, not to exceed eight capsules per day.

Late last month, IMH had announced the rollout of its FDgard product, a nonprescription medical food for the dietary management of functional dyspepsia (FD), or persistent or recurring indigestion, at most CVS/pharmacy and Walgreens stores.
