Kinney to hold ‘Medicine Collection Day’

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — Kinney Drugs next week plans to hold "Medicine Collection Day" at select stores to help customers safely dispose of old and unused medication.

The drug store chain, which operates 94 stores in upstate New York and Vermont, is encouraging consumers to bring discarded or expired medicines to drop-off areas at one of eight stores for proper disposal on Saturday, April 24. Such efforts, the retailer noted, help reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that find their way into water supplies and soil, as well as keep them out of the hands of children.

Customers are urged to keep the medication in the original container and to cross off their name and address but keep the name of the medicine visible. Pharmacists will then sort the drugs, which will be collected and disposed of at a licensed facility, Kinney said on its web site.

Drugs to be collected include prescription and over-the-counter medications, ointments, sprays, inhalers, creams, medication vials and pet medicines.

Drop-off areas will be at Kinney’s stores in Auburn, Ithaca, Liverpool, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Watertown and Whitesboro, N.Y., and in Burlington, Vt.
