ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A Democratic senator and a Republican congressman underscored the value of pharmacy’s role in health care in official remarks in the Congressional Record, according to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.

Sen. Kay Hagan (D., N.C.) and Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) made their remarks in the March 15 and March 10 issues, respectively, of the Congressional Record, which documents each day’s actions in Congress.

The lawmakers’ statements came in recognition of the NACDS’ second annual RxImpact Day on Capitol Hill. The association said Tuesday that more than 250 pharmacy advocates from 35 states participated in the grassroots event, held March 10 and 11 in Washington, D.C.

Titled "Contributions of Pharmacies Across the Country," Hagan’s comments in the Congressional Record emphasized the role of pharmacy in increasing medication adherence and, in turn, improving patient health and reducing health care costs. "As the face of neighborhood health care, pharmacies across the nation offer … cost-saving programs and services to help patients take medicines they need to achieve positive results from appropriate use of their medications," the senator wrote.

Roskam’s Congressional Record remarks, titled "Recognizing the 2010 RxImpact Day Held by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores," illustrated the accessibility and community role of drug chains. "I am delighted to recognize the chain drug stores nationwide that have a significant presence in my district," he stated. "Not only do they provide thousands of quality jobs, but these pharmacies also provide a vital service as part of the healthcare delivery system of my district."

In other NACDS news, Dawn Worthington has been hired as the trade association’s vice president of human resources. She is slated to start in the new post on April 1.

Worthington joins NACDS from the National Restaurant Association, where she had served as vice president of human resources and benefits since February 2005.

"Though human resources too often is perceived as an internal function, Dawn’s role includes a decidedly external focus: Equipping and engaging the NACDS staff team to deliver value to the membership," commented NACDS president and chief executive Steve Anderson.
