SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Lewis Drug this week broke ground on what it said was its first new, full-size store in two decades in Sioux Falls, S.D., where the drug chain is based.

The 35,000-square-foot store, to be located at 69th and Louise, is expected to open in November and will be roughly the size of the retailer’s current store at 41st and Marion Road, according to Lewis.

Lewis described the new outlet as a concept store, saying its design comes in response to customer requests for more convenience. One entrance of the store will lead directly into the pharmacy, and aisles will be wider and the shelves lower, enabling customers to see most of the store, the retailer said.

The new store also will feature more groceries and beverages, larger walk-in coolers and a bigger furniture and home decor section. 

According to president and chief executive officer Mark Griffin, the new Sioux Falls store will look much different than other Lewis outlets. Plans call for the store to include a year-round, state-of-the-art greenhouse that the company said would be the first of its size in South Dakota, and the environmentally friendly design would use recycled water and require less electricity to heat and cool.

"People are telling us they’re ecstatic Lewis is opening in this location," Griffin said in a statement. "Even our employees are excited the company is adding its sixth store in Sioux Falls."

Lewis noted that the decision to build comes six years after it bought the property in southwestern Sioux Falls. Griffin pointed out that the project’s launch came down to the economy and growth in the city.

"There are a lot more rooftops in the area today, and the major road construction on 69th and Louise has been completed," he explained. "On top of that, interest rates are low, and construction companies are looking for work. We think this is the perfect time to build."

The company added that the $3.5 million store is slated to bring 50 jobs to the area and spark additional development.

Overall, Lewis operates 32 drug stores in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota.
