ST. LOUIS — A Medicine Shoppe pharmacy in St. Louis sharpened its inventory management and prescription fulfillment using RxSafe dispensing technology from Johnson City, N.Y.-based pharmacy automation provider Innovation.

Innovation said Tuesday that Medicine Shoppe No. 1706 in St. Louis deployed the RxSafe 1800 robotic storage and retrieval system to get more transparency into their inventory and make dispensing scripts and managing drug inventory more efficient.

“We now fill and track the inventory of over 90% of our prescriptions using RxSafe, and our staff’s response to using the robot has been very positive. Our team is much more efficient in filling prescriptions, and I don’t have to keep a close eye on all fills of controlled substances,” Sam Bae, the owner of the Medicine Shoppe store, said in a statement. “We’ve also made great strides in reducing on-hand inventory and partial fills, and knowing what we have in stock at all times.”

The Medicine Shoppe location fills an average of 600 prescriptions daily. The RxSafe 1800 integrates with the store’s WinRx pharmacy management system from ComputerRx. The pharmacy also uses the Voice-Tech IVR system for refill processing.

Bae noted that the RxSafe also has eased staff scheduling issues. The pharmacy has one technician dedicated to operating RxSafe to fill prescriptions, and technicians are switched off every four hours.

“What’s been nice is we don’t have to rely on staffing issues at this point to fill prescriptions. One of our technicians recently quit, and it really didn’t affect our daily pharmacy routine,” Bae explained. “RxSafe has also reduced the hecticness in the pharmacy because the majority of prescriptions are filled at one station. Our staff is not running around like a chicken with our heads cut off like we were in the past.”

He added that his Medicine Shoppe was burglarized last year, but the intruders didn’t try to break into the RxSafe.

“I was viewing the cameras helplessly as they entered, but what I realized was that they didn’t know what to take,” he stated. “In fact, they passed by the robot numerous times not knowing what it was. Some were very selective looking at bottles to see if it was a controlled substance, and it was really good to know that our controlled substances were all locked up inside the robot.”
