WOONSOCKET, R.I. — MinuteClinic, the retail clinic arm of CVS Caremark Corp., and health benefits provider Humana Inc. plan to collaborate on activities to broaden Humana members’ access to convenient health care services.

The companies said Tuesday that the services will focus on managing routine illnesses, addressing gaps in care, and providing screenings to help identify risk factors for chronic illnesses.

Also, Humana next year plans to open a health clinic for its employees and their dependents at a Humana facility in downtown Louisville, Ky., where the company is based.

The clinic will be managed and operated by MinuteClinic and LifeSynch, Humana’s health and well-being subsidiary, according to the companies. A MinuteClinic nurse practitioner will staff the clinic, which will offer health screenings, on-site health coaching and integrated health and well-being services for clinic visitors through LifeSynch.

Plans call for the new Humana-MinuteClinic programs to be linked with Humana’s current programs and provide its members and employees expanded access to prevention and wellness services at the roughly 500 MinuteClinics nationwide. MinuteClinic has been an in-network health care provider for Humana members since 2006, the companies said.

Humana also aims to urge its members to visit MinuteClinics for health screenings to maintain their overall health and help detect or manage underlying chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. The services include blood pressure testing, cholesterol screenings and biometric screenings such as weight and body-mass index monitoring.

"We are pleased to work with Humana to enable their members to benefit from our expanded services such as health screenings and disease education now available at all MinuteClinic locations," MinuteClinic president and chief operating officer Andrew Sussman said in a statement. "By offering treatment in a convenient setting, we can work with Humana to help reduce health care expenses for its members, improve wellness and health outcomes, and reduce time spent away from members’ families and the workplace."

Under the agreement, Humana and MinuteClinic also plan to coordinate interfaces between their electronic medical records systems to streamline communication around all aspects of a patient’s care. The companies added that they will also explore the development of new services to promote members’ health and wellness.

"We’re excited to be partnering with MinuteClinic. They will clearly help some of our health plan members receive health care services they need, in an affordable and accessible manner," commented Bruce Perkins, senior vice president of health care delivery systems and clinical processes at Humana.

One of the nation’s largest publicly traded health and supplemental benefits companies, Humana has about 10.3 million medical members and 7.3 million specialty benefit members.
