WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health’s MinuteClinic has expanded to another state with its first walk-in medical clinics in Maine.

MinuteClinic said Wednesday that it has opened retail clinics inside CVS/pharmacy stores in Portland and South Portland. State Sen. Anne Haskell is slated to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Portland clinic.

Altogether in New England, MinuteClinic now has almost 100 retail clinic locations in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

“As we have experienced elsewhere in New England and across the United States, MinuteClinic can support the primary care medical home by offering services at convenient locations near where patients live and work and at times when traditional options for care may not be available for Portland area residents,” MinuteClinic president Andrew Sussman said in a statement.

MinuteClinics are open seven days a week, including weekday evening hours, and the company has said that about 50% of its visits occur on evenings, weekends and holidays. What’s more, MinuteClinic noted that approximately half of its patients nationwide lack a personal physician. People who visit MinuteClinic without a primary care provider are given a list of doctors in the area who are accepting new patients.

“We know there is a need for more accessible and affordable health care in Maine, and we believe the demand for MinuteClinic services will continue to grow due, in part, to the shortage of primary care physicians, the aging Baby Boomer population and the influx of newly insured patients through the Affordable Care Act,” stated Sussman, who is also executive vice president and associate chief medical officer for CVS Health.

Overall, MinuteClinic operates more than 1,000 locations inside CVS/pharmacy stores in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The company opened its 1,000th clinic last month in Washington, D.C. With the openings in Maine, MinuteClinic has edged closer to its multiyear expansion goal set by CVS Health.

“We’re working to transform primary care by expanding our national footprint, offering new clinical services and collaborating with health systems,” Sussman said in a Q&A on the CVS Health website. “We plan to have 1,500 clinics in 35 states by 2017 and, in time, half of all Americans will have a MinuteClinic within 10 miles of home.”
