MINNETONKA, Minn. — The UnitedHealthcare segment of UnitedHealth Group has added five retail chains to its program that provides Medicare Part D beneficiaries enrolled in the company’s plan with savings on the prescriptions they fill at the chains’ pharmacies.
Executives say the addition of Target Corp.; H.E. Butt Grocery Co.; Hy-Vee Inc.; Publix Super Markets Inc.; and Delhaize America Inc.’s Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Sweetbay supermarkets to UnitedHealthcare’s Pharmacy Saver program doubles the number of locations where members can access 30-day supplies of select prescription drugs for as little as $2 apiece.
The new chains added to the program join the thousands of pharmacies operated by Kroger Co. and Safeway Inc. under a variety of banners and UnitedHealth’s Prescription Solutions mail-order pharmacy. All three had previously agreed to be part of the Pharmacy Saver program.
UnitedHealthcare executives say the program lets members access hundreds of generic medications at a reduced out-of-pocket cost, sometimes as low as $2 for a 30-day supply, anywhere in the country by mail as well as at more than 6,000 pharmacy locations in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
“The rapid growth of Pharmacy Saver is a direct reflection of our commitment to finding new ways to bring important cost-savings benefits to our members,” says Tom Paul, chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. “We are pleased the addition of these new retailers will give even more members the opportunity to save money on their prescriptions.”
Finding ways to trim health care costs has become increasingly critical to a growing number of Medicare recipients, he says. Pharmacy Saver helps achieve that goal by reducing members’ out-of-pocket costs on select prescriptions.
“Many seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries are looking for ways to stretch their dollars,” Paul points out. “Combined with the other features of our Part D and Medicare Advantage plans, this new program can help our members get the most value for their money in 2011.”
The new program is the latest in a number of health care plans that UnitedHealthcare offers Medicare recipients.
Executives say the company’s 2011 Medicare product portfolio includes a comprehensive range of health and prescription drug plans that help seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries manage their health care costs.
UnitedHealthcare has created a web site — unitedpharmasaver.com — that provides details about each retailer’s program.
