Steve Anderson, president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, was presented CEO Update magazine’s 2016 Trade Association CEO of the Year award.

Anderson — just the third CEO to receive the honor — received the award Thursday at CEO Update’s 2016 Association Leadership Awards luncheon, held at the new Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., which the magazine said is one of the first events in the renovated Old Post Office.

Anderson was recognized for his contributions to NACDS, the chain drug industry and the association community. He was presented the award by previous winner Thomas Kuhn, president of the Edison Electric Institute.

The event — emceed by Jack Gerard, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, and Leslie Sarasin, CEO of the Food Marketing Institute — drew about 450 members of the association arena. CEO Update had announced in February that Anderson would receive the award.

Also last week, NACDS’ office was paid a visit by Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) co-chief operating officer Alex Gourlay, who is also vice chairman of the association.

NACDS said Gourlay talked with staff and stressed the value of the association’s work. In particular, he noted that pharmacists can use their training to a fuller extent and take on a bigger role in health care in their practice, according to NACDS.

“It blew my mind to see so many people in one place with a real passion for the industry,” stated Gourlay, who is a pharmacist. He explained that NACDS’ mission is to highlight “the value that pharmacy brings to the patient and the value NACDS brings to its members.”

The previous week, both Gourlay and Anderson attended the General Membership Meeting of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers in London along with other NACDS leaders. NACDS said the IFPW gathering brought together industry thought leaders and stakeholders as a way to bolster relationships and benefit the health care delivery system as a whole.

Other participants included Jim Whitman, senior vice president of NACDS member programs and services; NACDS board member and previous chairman Randy Edeker, chairman and CEO of Hy-Vee; Stefano Pessina, executive vice chairman and CEO of WBA; Ornella Barra, co-COO of WBA; Tom Moriarty, executive vice president and general counsel at CVS Health; and Steve Collis, chairman and CEO of AmerisourceBergen.
