LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Omron Healthcare Inc. has announced the retail launch of the Omron HEAT Pain Pro, an over-the-counter medical device that uses soothing heat and TENS technology to alleviate acute muscle and joint pain.

Omron said this week that the device marks a departure at-home TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) therapy because it’s only device on the market using TENS and heat, a combination used by physical therapists to boost the effectiveness of therapy.

TENS sends stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerve strands, and the pulses help prevent pain signals from reaching the brain, according to health device manufacturer Omron. Electrical stimulation can also trigger the body to release endorphins, which act as natural painkillers, the company said, adding that TENS technology previously was accessible only through doctor or health practitioner.

“Millions of Americans suffer from daily pain. Whether they are experiencing back pain, aching knees, joint pain or chronic discomfort, people are looking for more safe, effective pain management options,” stated Carol Lucarelli, director of marketing and product development at Omron. “Increased awareness of the potential dangers of opioids and prescription painkillers is driving more consumer interest in pain management options. The Omron HEAT Pain Pro is a safe, effective, accessible, drug-free choice.”

The Omron HEAT Pain Pro offers 27 combinations of heat and TENS modes and 20 levels of intensity. Sporting a user-friendly, large-button interface, the device also features preset therapy options for a range of conditions and body locations, including the lower back, arm, leg, foot, shoulders and joints.

Omron noted that the compact device fits in the palm of the hand, making it convenient for use at home or work. The product also has a rechargeable battery and gel pads, which can be used for up to 30 times before requiring replacement.

The Omron HEAT Pain Pro is currently available at Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy stores nationwide and can be purchased online at Amazon.com, CVS.com, OmronHealthcare.com and soon at Walgreens.com for a suggested retail price of $89.99.

“Less than a decade ago, we were the first to market with an over-the-counter TENS medical device for use at home,” Lucarelli added. “Now we are leading the category once again with groundbreaking new technology.”
