WASHINGTON — Online is where the growth is, as evidenced by this year’s Hot 25 Retailers List, released Wednesday by the National Retail Federation. Wine.com and overstock.com topped the list, which aims to highlight the nation’s most impactful and fastest-growing retail companies. The rankings, compiled by Kantar, are based on year-over-year percentage increases in domestic sales.

NRFWine.com recorded U.S. sales of $329 million in 2020, up 99.4% from the $165 million posted in 2019. Overstock.com saw 74.7% U.S. sales growth ($2.55 billion in sales in 2020, up from $1.459 billion in 2019), followed by online fashion retailer Boohoo Group which came in third place with 60% growth ($308 million in 2020, up from $192 million in 2019).

The list includes some larger companies as well. Amazon.com came in at seventh place with 33.7% U.S. sales growth. Amazon is “an extraordinarily large company, and the percentage of increase was impressive in that context,” notes Kantar senior vice president David Marcotte. Amazon had U.S. sales of $187.3 billion in 2020, up from $140 billion in 2019.

Retailers with a strong brick-and-mortar presence that made the list included Grocery Outlet at No. 16 with a sales gain of 22.5%, Dollar General at No. 18 (21.6%), Target at No. 20 (19.8%) and Publix at No. 25 (17.6%).
