Pharmacies cope with Adderall shortage

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

NEW YORK – Pharmacies are dealing with a shortage of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug Addderall (dextroamphetamine-amphetamine).

“There have been supply issues with the generic form of this drug,” said Walgreens spokeswoman Rebekah Pajak. “Our teams continue to work with our supplier and distribution partners in an effort to help meet patient demand. Any additional questions about availability should be directed to the drug’s manufacturers.”

CVS said, “We’re aware of intermittent shortages of generic amphetamine medication in the supply chain and our pharmacists will work with patients who are prescribed this medication as needed.”

The problem started last month when a labor shortage at Teva hit production of instant-release Adderall and dextroamphetamine-amphetamine.

Teva and suppliers Sandoz, Amneal and Rhodes subsequently placed extended-release dextroamphetamine-amphetamine on back order.

The shortfall comes as prescriptions for the drug have spiked with an increase in ADHD diagnoses. Amid COVID, the federal government made the prescriptions easier to get via telehealth . That prompted the emergence of online startups including Done Health and Cerebral Inc..

The Wall Street Journal reported in late spring that the Federal Trade Commission had begun a probe into Cerebral over promotions linked to mental health services.
