SAN DIEGO  — Iowa pharmacy owner Randy McDonough has received this year’s NARD Ownership Award from the National Community Pharmacists Association Foundation. The award was presented at the NCPA 2019 Annual Convention in San Diego.

The NARD Ownership Award recognizes an independent community pharmacist who embraces entrepreneurial spirit through promotion and demonstrated excellence in the field of community pharmacy ownership. The award is inspired by the NARD name, which was for a century the name associated with independent pharmacy. The National Community Pharmacists Association, which was founded in 1898 as the National Association of Retail Druggists, represents the nation’s community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 22,000 pharmacies.

McDonough is co-owner of Towncrest, Solon Towncrest, and Towncrest Compounding Pharmacies. He is also co-founder/co-owner of Innovative Pharmacy Solutions and Thrive Pharmacy Transformations. McDonough oversees Towncrest Pharmacy’s clinical services including MTM services, nursing home consulting, wellness screenings, immunizations, and adherence services. He is board certified in geriatrics and as a pharmacotherapy specialist. His areas of interest include community-based outcomes research, pharmaceutical education, geriatrics, disease state management, student development, and the development of patient care initiatives in the community pharmacy setting.

McDonough received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and PharmD degrees from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, where he is adjunct professor (clinical). He is frequently asked to speak on topics related to practice development and implementation, pharmaceutical care, and MTM in the community pharmacy setting. He has published articles and book chapters about pharmaceutical care and co-authored a book on this same topic. He is a member of APhA, NCPA, ACCP, ASCP, and the Iowa Pharmacy Association.
