Rexall to offer Hemocode food intolerance treatment

TORONTO — Rexall drug stores in Canada are slated to carry the Hemocode System, a treatment for people with food intolerance.

Developed by Toronto-based Gemoscan International Inc., the system employs a patented technology that uses a proprietary test to screen an individual’s blood against 250 foods and food additives, determining which ones contribute to debilitating conditions, the company said.

The product includes a finger stick test to determine which of the foods and additives are offensive, a detailed report outlining key food intolerances, a personalized food guide including recipes, e-newsletter updates with new recipes and health tips, and free consultation with a naturopathic doctor, according to Gemoscan.

Hemocode also stands to make a greater impact on the lives of those suffering from conditions as diverse as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, regular headaches, sleeplessness, and weight imbalance, the company added.

Plans call for the Hemocode System to be available in select Rexall stores.

"Considering the number of Canadians suffering from digestive health conditions, the Hemocode System is a valuable tool that offers those with food sensitivities a way to identify which foods induce an adverse affect, helping them to avoid serious reactions," stated Tracey Phillips, director of pharmacy services and marketing for Rexall, which is part of Katz Group.

"Through our partnership with the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation and the availability of the Hemocode System in select stores, we are able to provide our patients and customers with helpful resources to help them take a more proactive approach to their digestive health," Phillips commented.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration estimates that 30% of the population suffers reactions to foods and additives, according to Gemoscan. The company also noted that because the symptoms of food intolerance can vary widely, the condition often goes undetected and untreated.
