DEERFIELD, Ill. — Drug store industry veteran George Riedl will leave Walgreen Co. at the end of the year. He currently serves as senior vice president of pharmacy innovation and purchasing for the retailer.

Since March, Riedl has overseen the introduction of a new pharmacy system in Florida and Arizona that centralizes administrative tasks and provides in-store pharmacists additional time to counsel patients and to provide clinical services.

The rollout of the initiative has been completed in Florida and is approaching full implementation in Arizona. Riedl has agreed to finalize his transition from the company over the coming months.

“With the confidence I have in the direction of the company’s pharmacy operations and in Walgreens as a whole, this is the right time for me to move on to other opportunities,” relates Riedl. “I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

Among those praising Riedl’s 27-year career with Walgreens is president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson.

“George has played a key role in several areas, including marketing, merchandising, purchasing and pharmacy services,” Wasson points out. “We appreciate all that he has done for the company during that time and for his willingness to stay on during this transition period.”

“George’s outstanding leadership skills in developing and motivating staff will benefit our company for years to come. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
