CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid Corp. reported that its pharmacies in Washington state have a ready supply of the pertussis vaccine to meet demand amid a spike in the number of whooping cough cases.

The drug chain said late Monday that pharmacists at its 139 Washington locations are available to administer the Tdap vaccination on a walk-in basis during pharmacy hours.

Last week, the Washington State Department of Health reported 319 cases of whooping cough so far this year, up 551% from the number of cases in 2014.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people age 11 and older receive the Tdap vaccine. Although young children typically get the DTaP vaccine (for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis), the CDC recommends a Tdap dose between ages 11 and 12. Children between ages 7 and 10 who did not receive their full childhood schedule of DTaP may also receive their Tdap vaccine from a Rite Aid certified immunizing pharmacist.

In addition, the Tdap vaccine is recommended for health care professionals and anyone having close contact with a baby younger than 12 months, including grandparents, family members and child care providers. It’s also recommended that women who are pregnant receive a Tdap immunization to protect their newborn from whooping cough.
