Rx customers courted by Walgreens

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. is seeking to attract new pharmacy customers by offering a $25 gift card with every transferred prescription.

The offer is designed to capture new customers and educate patients on the benefits of having all their prescriptions in one pharmacy. It is being promoted on walgreens.com and in store circulars.

The offer is valid for transfers submitted online through May 31, except where prohibited. Scripts through government plans including Medicare Part D, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part B, Medicaid, Tricare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits program are ineligible.

Prescriptions may be transferred via the Walgreens mobile app’s new “Transfer by Scan” feature to get a scannable gift card.

Transfer by Scan enables Walgreens mobile app users on iPhone and Android to transfer a prescription from another pharmacy to Walgreens with two steps. Patients can complete transfers by taking a picture of their prescription bottle and providing their name, date of birth and phone number, then sending it to Walgreens with one click.

Refill by Scan, an industry first when it was launched in November 2010, allows patients to order refills by scanning a prescription bar code with their smartphone. The feature now generates more than 40% of all Walgreens’ online refills and accounts for more transactions than any other feature within the application.

Refill reminder and prescription ready text alerts are used by over 2 million Walgreens pharmacy customers by providing SMS messages to mobile users notifying them when prescriptions are due for refill and when prescriptions are ready for pickup. Standard data and messaging rates apply with use and download of all applications.

Walgreens’ March pharmacy sales decreased 8.4%, with prescriptions filled at comparable stores dropping 11.4%. The negative impact on comparable-store prescriptions filled due to the chain’s no longer being part of the Express Scripts Inc. pharmacy network was 10.7 percentage points.
