MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu Inc. has agreed to sell six bigg’s supermarkets and their pharmacies in the greater Cincinnati area to local grocery chain Remke Markets.

Four of the stores being sold are in Cincinnati, and the other two are in Hyde Park and Mason, Ohio.

The supermarket retailer and wholesaler said Monday the transaction is expected to close in the spring and that its distribution center in Xenia, Ohio, will supply the stores being sold to Remke Markets, which will now have 13 locally owned and operated stores.

Plans call for Supervalu to close its five remaining bigg’s food and drug stores before the end of May. Two of those locations are in Cincinnati; one is in Harrison, Ohio; one is in West Chester, Ohio; and the other one is in Florence, Ky.

Prescription files at the Florence bigg’s store will be transferred to Remke’s Turfway store later this spring, while the other four pharmacies’ files will be transferred to another local company, according to Supervalu.

Supervalu’s network covers 4,290 supermarkets, including 850 company-operated food and drug combination stores.
