DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has launched the Walgreens Way to Well Health Tour with the National Urban League (NUL) as a charitable component of the drug chain’s Way to Well Commitment, a four-year, $100 million effort aimed at improving the everyday health of Americans.

The national tour will provide free health resources — including health tests, assessments, education and consulting services — to urban and minority communities that experience disproportionately higher rates of preventable disease.

“Way to Well reflects our commitment to disease prevention and to improving everyday health through education and early detection,” says John Gremer, director of community affairs for Walgreens. “With the NUL, the nationwide traveling health tour is one way we deliver on our pledge to improve lives by providing underserved communities greater access to the resources they need.”

Walgreens has unveiled a similar effort with AARP. The Walgreens Way to Well Health Tour with AARP offers free health tests, assessments, education and consulting services to communities — primarily cities — with the highest prevalence for leading diseases and the highest uninsured and unemployed populations.

The tests aim to detect symptoms and potential risks for cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Testing includes total cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, body composition, skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, visceral fat, real body age and body weight.

Afterward, participants consult with a Walgreens pharmacist or certified wellness staffer about their results. All participants also get a free, one-year AARP membership.
