BOCA RATON, Fla. — Med Time Technology Inc. has reached an agreement in which its Pill Timer vial caps, which alert users when to take their medication, will be offered on packaging from Rexam Plastics, one of the nation’s largest makers of plastic prescription vials.

Med Time said it soon plans to announce the first pharmacy chains that will dispense The Pill Timer cap, which lets users set an alarm to signal when they need to take their medication, on Rexam vials.

"Until there is a cure for diseases or chronic condition, the next best thing we can do to help patients maximize health benefits and minimize risk of treatment failure is by taking medications on time," Med Time chief executive officer Ian Shendale said in a statement. "Rexam’s goal was to select a partner who could supply a single, harmonized platform that presents state-of-the-art, interactive medication alerts."

Designed to promote medication adherence, The Pill Timer cap beeps and flashes when it’s time for patients to take their medicine. Dosage times may be designated by the pharmacist or the patient. The Pill Timer incorporates 100 medication commands, and its LCD screen flashes if dosage is missed and presents pre- and post-medication information. Also, a built-in reminder alarm activates every hour after a dosage has been missed.

Rexam sales director Mike Vanderpol commented, "Innovative packaging solutions to medical problems is the lifeblood of our business. This strategic alliance enables our customers to help patients with chronic illness and life threatening diseases by effectively managing a medical condition with proper medication management."

In June 2009, Med Time announced that it had retained TransMedia Group to publicize The Pill Timer, which is said to be the first vial cap that includes a medication management operating system to help patients safely manage their prescription drugs. The promotional campaign featured retail pharmacy network Health Mart.

According to Med Time, The Pill Timer is used by such pharmacies as CVS, Rite Aid, Health Mart, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club and Publix.
