NEW YORK — Retail pharmacy chains quickly responded to the devastating tornado in Moore, Okla., late last month.

The day after the storm tore through the suburb of Oklahoma City, Walgreen Co. mobilized increased shipments of essential supplies to its stores in the area, donated three semi-trailers of food, water and first aid supplies to the Oklahoma chapter of the American Red Cross and began collecting monetary donations at its stores across Oklahoma.

Because Walgreens’ store in Moore was extensively damaged and had to be closed, the company brought in a pharmacy trailer at the site.

In addition, Walgreens worked with the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy to enact emergency procedures allowing pharmacists to help displaced patients refill prescriptions if they lack documentation or an empty prescription bottle.

Meanwhile, other retailers and affiliated groups have also stepped up to the plate.

The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, for instance gave $25,000 to the American Red Cross to support the organization’s tornado relief effort. In addition, the trust agreed to match up to another $25,000 in employee donations.

For its part, Target Corp. donated $250,000 in monetary support and merchandise to the relief effort.
