DEERFIELD, Ill. — Continuing to stretch the bounds of retail pharmacy, Walgreen Co. has opened one of the country’s most comprehensive work-site health centers.

The facility, at the BMW Manufacturing campus in Spartanburg, S.C., provides the automaker’s employees, dependents and eligible retirees a wide range of health services, including primary and occupational care. The 25,000-square-foot center is managed by the Walgreens Employer Solutions Group.

Also last month Walgreens debuted its latest employee clinic for United Airlines, at O’Hare International Airport. The clinic is open to more than 10,000 United employees in the Chicago area.

January also saw the retailer’s launch of a method for systematizing multiple prescriptions. DailyMed by Walgreens offers a safe and effective way for patients to organize and keep track of medications, with individual, presorted packets that indicate dosage dates and times.

Nonadherence to medication therapies is a significant barrier to treating illness, with up to 11% of hospital admissions attributable to patients not taking drugs as prescribed. Nonadherence is estimated to cost the U.S. health care system around $300 billion per year. Recent studies have shown face-to-face patient counseling and access to both on-site pharmacy and full-service health centers can drive a nearly 10% increase in medication adherence.

Patients at the BMW health center will have access to services including physical exams, chronic disease management, dental and vision care, physical therapy, high blood pressure management and personalized health coaching. The center will also use state-of-the-art medical technology to offer a laboratory for medical testing, digital x-rays, biometric screenings and mobile mammography scans. The expanded full-service pharmacy will include private consultation rooms, an extensive selection of over-the-counter medications and a drive-through window.

“Walgreens has increasingly shown how investing in work-site health programs can be instrumental in helping to reduce costs for employers, while improving the overall health and productivity of their workforce,” said Walgreens group vice president Peter Hotz. “We’re proud to expand our relationship with BMW and look forward to helping its associates, their dependents and company retirees get, stay and live well through a broad scope of on-site health and wellness programs and services.”

Annmarie Higgins, vice president of human resources for BMW Manufacturing, commented, “We want to bring quality health care to associates and their families in a cost-effective and efficient manner. We want to provide individuals greater opportunity to reach and maintain optimal health through education, prevention, early detection and management of existing health conditions.”

Outside Chicago, the 5,200-square-foot United clinic the Terminal 2 arrivals area is the only one of its kind at O’Hare.

“More employers are recognizing the benefits of work-site health centers and wellness programs to improve the overall health, satisfaction and productivity of their employees, while also reducing costs,” said Walgreens president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson. “This project brings together two companies with deep Chicago roots to make health and wellness a top priority.” Walgreens now manages five workplace clinics for United.

Jeff Smisek, the airline’s chairman, president and CEO, who joined Wasson for the clinic’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, said,“We’re continuing to make significant investments in United, including investments in our coworkers. This clinic will offer convenient health services at no charge to keep our coworkers feeling and performing well.”

Rosemarie Andolino, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, commented, “United’s new clinic is in line with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s mission to encourage healthy habits for Chicago residents. This facility further demonstrates United’s commitment to its employees and investment here at O’Hare.”

In California, DailyMed by Walgreens has been introduced as a prelude to a national rollout. Under an affiliation agreement with ResCare Inc., the country’s largest privately owned home care company, Walgreens will feature ResCare education materials with DailyMed products. ResCare HomeCare employees will discuss DailyMed with their clients as part of a range of services the company offers to help people live more independently.
