Walgreen Co. has stepped up access for on-the-go customers with a relaunched mobile Web site and iPhone application plus prescription text alerts and other new capabilities for text messaging and smart phone users.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has stepped up access for on-the-go customers with a relaunched mobile Web site and iPhone application plus prescription text alerts and other new capabilities for text messaging and smart phone users.

The drug store chain said Tuesday the enhanced mobile features reflect consumers’ rising use of "smart" handheld devices and communication tools such as texting in more and more areas of their everyday lives — including health care.

"We strive to lead the market in bringing new and innovative technology to our pharmacies and pharmacy patients," Mark Wagner, Walgreens’ executive vice president of operations and community management, said in a statement. "Text alerts are a valuable time-saving tool and the latest example of how our mobile applications are further connecting the Web to Walgreens stores and pharmacies, giving customers on-the-go convenience wherever they are."

New Walgreens mobile features include the prescription text alerts, special offer texts, an updated iPhone application and an Android/Blackberry mobile Web site application. The mobile web site can be found at m.walgreens.com.

With the prescription text alerts, patients signing up can receive a text message from a Walgreens pharmacy when their prescriptions are ready or if there are any status changes. The text alerts are also available in Spanish.

The special offer texts provide information about exclusive Walgreens deals and coupons, as well as important information and the latest services available in stores and online. Customers can sign up through the Walgreens mobile site or by texting "Walgreens" to 21525.

Meanwhile, the relaunched iPhone application brings new features and functionality, including photo account registration, enabling customers to sign up for an account to upload photos and order prints from an iPhone directly from the Walgreens mobile site; the ability to browse products and check their in-store availability; the ability to view prescription history and access it anywhere, anytime; and a one-touch GPS store locator, enabling people to find the nearest Walgreens with one touch of the "Find store near me" icon on the home page.

And Blackberry and Android users can now download the Walgreens mobile site application from their respective marketplaces — Blackberry App World and Android App Market — to establish quick and easy access to the mobile site features.

As part of an enhanced web site, Walgreens launched its mobile application last fall. New mobile features included on-the-go prescription refill ordering, with medications prepared for in-store pickup; a store locator; the ability to view photos and order prints directly from any Web-enabled mobile device; and the ability to shop and view product details, prices and customer reviews before making an in-store purchase.
