DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has launched a redesigned web site that the drug chain said provides new healthy living and product resources plus time-saving pharmacy and shopping tools and services.

The new Walgreens.com site brings features to make it easier to manage prescriptions online, photo service enhancements, new mobile applications and interactive tools to help consumers better understand and monitor their health, Walgreens said Monday.

Enhanced pharmacy options include Express Refills, which allows customers to enter a prescription number online for in-store pickup, with no login required, and select a date and time for pickup. Also, customers can choose to be notified via e-mail when their prescriptions are ready.

Another new feature, Auto Refill, processes prescription refills automatically, and customers are sent an e-mail notification when the refill is ready for pickup. In addition, Refill Reminder e-mails notify customers when one or more maintenance prescriptions are due for a refill. The e-mails contain a link that enables customers to go directly to their online account, with the prescriptions preselected, according to Walgreens.

Prescription refills ordered online can be shipped free via standard shipping or picked up at a Walgreens store, the company added.

On the health and wellness side, the relaunched site’s Walgreens Health Shops offer a wide range of products, health care resources, care guides and calculators for heart risk and other important symptoms, providing one-stop shopping for products, information and interactive tools covering allergy, blood pressure, diabetes, flu, heart health, pregnancy, new moms and weight loss, Walgreens said.

Walgreens.com carries most healthful living products available in Walgreens stores, including vitamins, home medical, and health and wellness items, plus thousands more items available online only. Shipping is free for orders of more than $50.

The Walgreens Health Shops also serve up timely, relevant information about common health concerns such as allergies, asthma, cholesterol, diabetes, flu, high blood pressure, vision, exercise, pregnancy, smoking cessation and weight loss. Interactive tools and content, too, provide health risk assessments that give evaluations and insight into such areas as diet, exercise, smoking, blood pressure and immunization schedules.

Other health calculators on the site include body weight, target heart rate and body mass index as well as a calorie burner counter.

Walgreens also added some convenience features for shopping on the revamped site. Customers can now check the availability of products at local stores, and they can place orders in-store for an expanded assortment of products not generally available at the brick-and-mortar stores, with the orders shipped directly to the customer’s home or to the store for pickup.

In addition, the Walgreens.com Photo Center now provides the Easy ImageUpload tool, a Flash-based application that lets customers quickly add images to their online photo albums, making it easier to order prints, share photos and create personalized gifts. Photos and albums can be shared through e-mail and various social media sites, including Facebook and MySpace. Walgreens said the site also added hundreds of new designs to its photo greeting card selection for the holiday season.

With the site relaunch, Walgreens also is bringing the conveniences of its stores to any Web-enabled mobile phone. By entering www.walgreens.com into a mobile browser, consumers can access such features as online pharmacy and in-store prescription refills; a store locator; the W Photo application, which lets customers view photos and order prints from their Web-enabled mobile device; and a product browser, which enables mobile users to shop and view product details, prices and customer reviews.

The retailer, too, is now offering the Walgreens iPhone application for Apple iPhone users. The application includes all the features of the Walgreens.com mobile site plus allows iPhone users to upload and order photo prints and find the nearest Walgreens via GPS-based store locator.

"We pride ourselves on having the most convenient locations throughout the U.S., and now Walgreens is adding greater convenience for our growing numbers of customers who shop with us online," Sona Chawla, Walgreens’ senior vice president of e-commerce, said in a statement. "We’ve integrated our content, products and services to offer customers a more holistic online solution."

Walgreens said its site averages more than 13 million visits per month.
