Walgreens helps consumers make most of smartphones

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has introduced mobile applications that allow its customers to use their smartphones to do everything from managing their prescriptions to ordering photographic prints.

The drug chain’s most recent move involves teaming up with the location-based social media site foursquare on a new mobile coupon program. Consumers who check in to any Walgreens location through foursquare receive a unique scannable coupon that they can redeem at the store.

The program, which kicked off earlier this month with a coupon for 50% off on cans of AriZona Iced Tea, works with iPhone, Android or BlackBerry devices.

The foursquare coupon program is exclusive to Walgreens, the company says, adding that it builds on the chain’s status as the U.S. retailer with the largest foursquare following.

“We’re using mobile technology and social media to better engage Walgreens customers, to give them convenient channels to interact with us, and to deliver products, services and savings they truly value,” said Walgreens e-commerce president Sona Chawla. “Foursquare shares our commitment to innovation, and together we’ve developed some unique, breakthrough offerings that cater to today’s tech-savvy consumers. With this program, it’s just check in and the coupon is displayed instantly.”

Walgreens has previous experience with mobile coupons, having introduced them as a feature of its smartphone applications in November. Other features that have been added to those applications are Pill Reminder and Transfer by Scan, both of which are designed to help people better manage their prescription needs and foster greater medication adherence.

Pill Reminder allows Walgreens iPhone mobile app users to track their medication schedules and set up hourly or daily reminders (other customizable options are also available). Customers can set up reminders simply by scanning a prescription barcode and selecting alert preferences. Users can also add multiple prescriptions, vitamins and other supplements to a single reminder notification.

Transfer by Scan enables Walgreens mobile app users on iPhone and Android to easily transfer a prescription from another pharmacy to Walgreens: Patients simply take a picture of their prescription bottle and provide their name, date of birth and phone number, and then send the photo and information to Walgreens with one quick click.

Refill by Scan, which launched in November 2010 and allows patients to order refills by scanning a prescription barcode with their smartphone, now generates more than 40% of all Walgreens online refills and accounts for more transactions than any other feature within the application.

Another new feature, meanwhile, is QuickPrints, which allows mobile customers to order prints directly from their iPhone or Android device, with no log-in necessary, and pick them up at any Walgreens store in as little as one hour.
