Walgreens makes Medicare Part D connection

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Competition for Medicare Part D prescription market share remains stiff among large pharmacy retailers. One of the ways that chains are winning over seniors — besides being in preferred pharmacy networks — is by providing them with lots of assistance as they navigate the maze of Part D prescription drug benefit plans and terms.

To that end, Walgreens has partnered with eHealth, an independent, licensed health insurance broker that works with more than 180 insurance carriers nationwide. Free, personalized advice from a licensed eHealth adviser is available at ehealthmedicare.com/Walgreens.

Medicare beneficiaries also can go online to Walgreens.com/Medicare for help in navigating insurance plans. In addition, Walgreens offers the “Medicare Savings Guide” online and in its stores. Walgreens, too, makes its pharmacists available to seniors to discuss ways that they can reduce prescription costs, including via 90-day refills and using lower-cost brands.

This past fall, a survey of 1,000 Medicare Part D beneficiaries conducted for Walgreens found that 34% of seniors aren’t reviewing their drug benefits plan before renewing it, and 19% don’t have a good understanding of their plan.
