DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has hired new chief information and chief technology officers and a marketing services vice president.

The drug store chain on Thursday said Tim Theriault will join the company as CIO and senior vice president effective October 1. Also joining Walgreens are Abhi Dhar, as CTO and divisional vice president of e-commerce, and Deborah Sabo, as divisional vice president of marketing services.

As part of Walgreens’ senior leadership team, Theriault, 49, will be responsible for the overall information technology strategy to help drive the company’s new businesses and strategic initiatives. The retailer said that includes developing the enterprise architecture vision, enhancing applications and building the infrastructure to support business units.

Theriault comes to Walgreens from Northern Trust Corp., where he held a variety of leadership posts in his 25-year tenure at the banking firm, most recently as president of corporate and institutional services. He also served as president of worldwide operations and technology and as chief technology officer at Northern Trust. Theriault also has worked in advanced technologies at S.C. Johnson and Son Inc.

"Tim is a highly respected technology and banking executive who brings a unique combination of leadership, innovation and business intellect," Walgreens president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson said in a statement. "His strategic business skills, reputation for building teams and financial background give Tim a combination of technology and business expertise that extends well beyond the IT space."

Denise Wong, formerly CIO and vice president at Walgreens, has been named corporate vice president of information technologies, focusing on elevating in-store retail and corporate shared services IT systems, the company said.

Dhar, 37, who now heads IT in Walgreens’ e-commerce unit, is responsible for end-to-end delivery, development and innovation of the online platform, according to the company. He previously served as CIO and senior vice president at TravelCLICK since 2006, where he built an IT and product delivery organization by restructuring the team, recruiting talent and optimizing vendor relationships, Walgreens said.

He also has held technology leadership roles at Cendant Corp. and its Travelport division and has worked in engineering consulting capacities with PricewaterhouseCoopers and AT&T.

Sabo, 47, joined Walgreens last month as divisional vice president of marketing services, where she manages and leads all consumer communications programs, including media, promotions and cause marketing. She also oversees in-store and out-of-store visual brand identity.

Before joining Walgreens, Sabo spent 18 years at Sara Lee Corp., most recently as vice president of marketing services. At Sara Lee, she led the development and execution of all brands’ communication plans, including media, promotions, digital, merchandising and co-marketing programs, the drug chain said. Prior to joining Sara Lee, Sabo spent five years at Block Drug Co. in New Jersey.
