DEERFIELD, Ill., and PRINCETON, N.J. — For National Diabetes Month, Walgreen Co. and Novo Nordisk Inc. have partnered to provide a free needle disposal system for patients who self-inject.

The companies said Monday that customers can buy the Sharps Compliance Complete Needle Collection & Disposal System at any Walgreens from Oct. 23 to Nov. 19 and get a rebate form at checkout for the $4.99 cost of the system.

For customers concerned with environmentally responsible disposal, the receipt will also include the Novo Nordisk sponsorship redemption coupon for the free return postage and incineration of the container and needles, a $20 value.

"Patients who self-inject medications at home often ask our pharmacists how and where they can dispose of their needles safely," Suzanne Hansen, group vice president of pharmacy operations at Walgreens, said in a statement. "This system offers customers safe and easy needle disposal, as well as an option for the eco-conscious. This is another way we’re offering support to people with chronic conditions, making it easier for them to live well, get well and stay well."

Phil Fornecker, corporate vice president of strategic business operations for Novo Nordisk, noted that diabetes patients are seeking ways that support their daily routines in managing the disease. "Insulin is a very effective way to manage diabetes, and patients managing their diabetes through injections should easily be able to dispose of their needles properly," he commented. "Having a convenient disposal system can give them peace of mind, knowing they’re protecting their family and community."

According to Sharps Compliance, the Complete Needle Collection & Disposal System is designed to be a turnkey solution for consumers. It includes Sharps’ containment, packaging and return shipping via the U.S. Postal Service as well as compliant tracking and treatment.

"Our unique, three-way cooperative arrangement with Walgreens and Novo Nordisk is the first of its kind to involve a retail pharmacy and pharmaceutical manufacturer to address the proper handling and disposal of needles for the approximately 13.5 million people that require injectable medications for their health and well-being," stated David Tusa, president and chief executive officer of Sharps Compliance. "Walgreens and Novo Nordisk will provide rebates and redemption coupons to their customers so they can obtain our comprehensive, patent-pending Complete Needle Collection & Disposal System for free at any Walgreens during the promotional period."
