DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. is now rolling out Duane Reade’s DR Delish private brand line of premium snacks and beverages in stores nationwide.

The Deerfield, Ill.-based drug store chain, which acquired New York-based Duane Reade earlier this year, said Friday that Walgreens stores are starting out with 10 DR Delish items, which are now featured on an end cap display that hit more than 6,000 stores this week.

According to Walgreens, the first DR Delish items, which run from $2.99 to $7.49, include trail mix (blueberry pomegranate crunch, mango crunch and pistachio crunch), Broadway cookies (chocolate chip, oatmeal chocolate chunk, chocolate chip with pecan, and raisin oatmeal), a tub of pretzel rods and gallon teas (sweet tea and green tea with ginseng and honey).

Plans call for other DR Delish products to be rotated in or added to shelves in the fall, Walgreens said, noting that the snacks and beverages sell at prices below those of the leading national brands.

"Introducing the DR Delish line of products in our stores is one of the first big steps toward bringing the best of Duane Reade to Walgreens," Bryan Pugh, vice president of merchandising at Walgreens, said in a statement. "The DR Delish brand allows us to offer our customers snacks and beverages with premium recipes but at more affordable prices.

"These were among the most popular DR Delish products in the New York market, so we’re confident they’ll be a hit with our customers nationwide," Pugh added. "Our plan is to expand the selection available at Walgreens in the coming months."

Last month, chief executive officer Greg Wasson had said in the company’s third-quarter conference call with analysts that Walgreens planned to offer an initial selection of DR Delish consumables in August.

Duane Reade’s premium private label was a key attraction for Walgreens when it announced its acquisition of the metropolitan New York drug chain in February.

DR Delish made its debut at Duane Reade stores last September. The line launched with 25 food and beverage items — including juice, tea, trail mix, baked potato crisps, multigrain snacks, brownie snacks and cookies — and expanded to more than 100 items by the end of 2009.
