In unveiling a new senior leadership team, new Walmart U.S. CEO Bill Simon said chief merchandising officer John Fleming is leaving the company.

Simon also announced, among other changes in executive responsibilities, that grocery chief Jack Sinclair will now oversee the discount store giant's health and wellness merchandising teams in addition to his current duties.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart executive vice president and chief merchandising officer John Fleming is leaving the company.

Walmart said Friday that the move will be effective on Aug. 1. The announcement comes just days after the discount store giant unveiled another big management change, the appointment of Bill Simon as Walmart U.S. president and chief executive officer.

Simon notified Walmart associates of Flemings departure in a memo that detailed a new senior leadership team.

Jack Sinclair, executive vice president and general manager of grocery, will remain in charge of food and will also take charge of Walmart’s health and wellness merchandising teams. John Westling, executive vice president of planning, pricing and replenishment, will lead Walmart’s general merchandising and replenishment teams.

"Both Jack and John Westling will report directly to me until we name a replacement for John [Fleming]," Simon said in his memo.

The retailer has also promoted Gisel Ruiz to executive vice president of Walmart People, as part of a move to align its human resources function to support both field and home office personnel. Ruiz, who began her career at Walmart in 1992 as a management trainee, most recently served as senior vice president of People, a post she has held since 2008.

"In her newly expanded role, Gisel is responsible for the HR function across our field and home office organizations, including talent management and compensation," Simon said.
