World Pharmacy Council names Hoey to serve as president

ALEXANDRIA, Va.  — National Community Pharmacists Association CEO B. Douglas Hoey has been elected to simultaneously serve as president of the World Pharmacy Council, an international group with a mission of building international recognition of community pharmacy and its role, policies, and value to citizens around the world.

“Community pharmacies in many countries have been integral to the fight against COVID-19 pandemic,” said Hoey. “I am humbled to be elected by my international colleagues to promote the work pharmacists are doing around the world to improve quality of care, lower overall health care costs, and act as local economic powerhouses to communities throughout the world.”

In addition to the U.S., the WPC represents community pharmacy organizations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Australia, and New Zealand. Its members have met annually for the past several decades to discuss the role, opportunities, and issues facing community pharmacies. It is also a member of the expert health group of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Business at OECD. This intergovernmental organization comprises 36 member countries, with a mission to improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world.

“In today’s global economy, no one country has a monopoly on innovative ideas. Through the WPC, we are able to exchange information that advances practice in our respective countries, and, importantly, speak with one voice to governments around the world about the vital role community pharmacists can and do play in the health and welfare in their countries. I’m honored to have this opportunity,” said Hoey.
