BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Walgreens has agreed to carry ZymaDerm, a painless topical treatment for the skin infection molluscum contagiosum, at its drug stores nationwide.

Naturopathix Inc., which markets ZymaDerm, said Wednesday that the over-the-counter treatment makes the skin condition disappear in 30 days.

A patented blend of natural, plant-based compounds, ZymaDerm transforms the treatment of molluscum contagiosum from expensive and often painful procedures such as freezing, burning or surgical removal of the lesions to simply dabbing on an aromatic blend twice a day, usually for less than a month, until the lesions vanish, according to Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Naturopathix. It can be used safely on all body areas, including the face and private areas, the company said.

Molluscum contagiosum is a highly contagious skin infection caused by a virus from the poxvirus family. Symptoms include raised, warty lesions on the skin. It’s a common infection throughout the United States and accounts for about 1% of all diagnoses of skin disorders, Naturopathix reported.

Children contract molluscum contagiosum most frequently, catching it when they come into contact with the virus, usually on the skin of another infected child or on a wet surface infected with the virus. The lesions, which can rapidly spread, are on the face, neck, armpit, arms and hands but may occur anywhere on the body except the palms and soles.

For adults, the virus also spreads by sexual contact. Early lesions on the genitals may be mistaken for herpes or warts, but unlike herpes these lesions are painless.

Naturopathix said ZymaDerm is the most widely used painless, rapid treatment for molluscum contagiosum, enabling over 200,000 people to get rid of the condition.

To encourage people to use ZymaDerm, Naturopathix offers a six-month money back guaranty.

"If ZymaDerm does not make your child’s or your molluscum contagiosum painlessly vanish within 30 days, I’ll refund your money," stated Dr. Briant Burke, creator of the treatment and the medical director of Naturopathix.

ZymaDerm has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a homeopathic drug, the company said.
