PICKERING, Ontario — Medical Pharmacies Group Ltd. has completed its acquisition of Desjardins Healthcare Group, an Ottawa-based provider of specialty pharmacy services and medical supplies and equipment.

Medical Pharmacies said Friday that work is "well under way" to integrate the companies’ operations.

Announced in mid-September, the deal brings Desjardins’ broad range of health care products and services to Medical Pharmacies’ lineup of offerings and expands the company’s pharmacy business in eastern Ontario.

Medical Pharmacies has 38 pharmacy locations in Ontario and British Columbia and is Canada’s largest provider of pharmacy services to long-term care facilities and retirement homes.

"We look forward to delivering the full benefits of this acquisition to customers and employees of the combined company," Ed Jamieson, president and chief executive officer of Medical Pharmacies Group, said in a statement. "With a complementary suite of health care products and pharmacy services, we are now well-positioned to accelerate our growth across Canada."

Specifically, Medical Pharmacies said, Desjardins adds significant experience and presence in home infusion therapy, total parenteral nutrition, and medical products and equipment services such as home oxygen, wound care and pressure management, mobility, incontinence, and home health care products.

Plans call for Desjardins’ medical supply and equipment business to retain the Ontario Medical Supplies Inc. name.

The combined companies’ products and services reach more than 45,000 seniors in long-term care and retirement homes, with thousands more receiving care via the Ontario Community Care Access Centres’ Home Care Program.
