MONTREAL — Pharmaprix stores will make their debit card readers more accessible to disabled customers, under an agreement with the Quebec Human Rights Commission.

Pharmaprix, operated by Toronto-based Shoppers Drug Mart Corp., will connect debit card readers to cash registers with a movable cable, the commission said Wednesday.

To prevent debit information theft, many chains have attached their card readers to a stationery metal base, which can not be reached by customers in wheelchairs.

Linda Gauthier of Montreal, who uses a wheelchair, filed a complaint to the commission in January after she could not access the reader at a Pharmaprix store. Gauthier’s complaint was backed by local advocacy organizations for the disabled, which argued that attaching readers to checkout counters was discriminatory.

Human Rights Commission president Gaétan Cousineau urged other retailers to make readers accessible to the disabled.
