Cuts to impact Deerfield headquarters and Chicago office.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens announced this week that it will be cutting over 500 jobs with most of the cuts impacting employees at the company’s Deerfield headquarters and its Chicago office, said a company spokesperson.

About 10% or 504 corporate employees will be laid off, Walgreens  spokesman Marty Maloney confirmed, noting that none of the staff at WBA’s stores, micro fulfillment centers, or call centers will be part of the staff reduction.

“We’re grateful for the many contributions by the team members who will be leaving our organization, and are committed to supporting them as much as possible during this transition,” Maloney said.

He added that the job cuts are not connected to the company’s financial liabilities. The company recently posted a major operating loss in the first quarter as it pays out $6.5 billion in settlements related to the nationwide opioid crisis.

In a message to employees, CEO Rosalind Brewer says the company is cutting the workers “to drive sustainable cost savings to help fuel investments for future growth. . . .While difficult, these changes are necessary to streamline our business, unlock value and support our long-term goals.”
