Consumers seek more solutions when it comes to snoring

NEW YORK — Snoring is a common problem among all ages and both genders, and it affects approximately 90 million American adults — 37 million on a regular basis. Snoring usually becomes more serious as people age. It can cause disruptions to your own sleep and your bed-partner’s sleep as well.
The two most common adverse health effects that are believed to be casually linked to snoring are daytime dysfunction and heart disease. About one-half of people who snore loudly could have obstructive sleep apnea.

Shane Duncan, vice president of global sales and marketing at Rhinomed says that consumers are becoming more savvy and are looking for better solutions as they are frustrated with products that over promise and under deliver.

Duncan notes that Rhinomed is working with its retailers to help the consumer understand that treating snoring can be multifactorial, improve how they breathe, look at the sleeping position, and maybe combine with an over-the-counter oral appliance. “Many people will need a combination of products to effectively treat their snoring. By educating the consumer on this they are more effectively shopping the category and getting on the path to finding the best strategy for their snoring.”

He explains that consumers in this category have previously purchased products claiming 100% efficacy and have been disappointed. Claims like this do not take into account for the different type of snorers, matching the type of snorer to the right strategy or product is very important.

“Consumers have been trying external and internal products to help them breathe better through their noses for years. The primary problem has been comfort and irritation on the skin of the nose or the tissues inside the nose. The primary focus of our development of Mute has been on comfort, which is why we have three sizes and the ability to adjust the device. This ensures we can deliver a custom fit for each nose, making it easier the wear the device for 8 hours a night 7 days a week,” Duncan concludes.

Josh Gabriel, brand manager at Breathe Right says the country is in the middle of a cultural shift to reclaim sleep. “In line with health and well-being trends, we’ve seen the importance of sleep rise specifically in popular culture, which is great because sleep is crucial to our health. However, Breathe Right has noticed that while people value sleep overall, they’ve missed the importance of breathing and the role it plays in getting quality sleep. We think there’s a unique opportunity to elevate the role of breathing to help people get better quality of sleep.”

He explains that snoring aids continue to live in a small segment, mainly focused on reducing noise and better sleep for themselves and for their bed partners. Sleep is an important factor in quality of life so a little peace and quiet in the bedroom can go a long way.

He adds that increased value of sleep has sparked the rise of mainstream sleep aids as well as more brands within the realm of sleep positioning themselves as a tool for better sleep.

“Not only are we looking at competitors within the nasal strip or nighttime decongestant category but also sleep aids, supplements, mattresses, apps and the list goes on. These are being covered by a broad range of media, thus reaching a diverse market.

Many of these tools, including sleep tracking apps, have experienced a cycle of initial excitement followed by widespread debunking, similar to most trends these days.”

Gabriel notes that Breathe Right Nasal Strips are a non-medicated solution that mechanically lifts nostrils to simply help you breathe better. “This method helps alleviate snoring and nasal congestion by immediately opening nasal passages. By enabling people to breathe through their noses, Breathe Right allows people to get a more restful night’s sleep,” he adds.
