WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark Corp. has named Thomas Moriarty executive vice president and general counsel.

Moriarty, 49, most recently served as general counsel at Celgene Corp., a biopharmaceutical company, where he was responsible for global legal strategy and served on the management committee. Prior to that he was general counsel and corporate secretary at Medco Health Solutions Inc.

“We’re very excited to have Tom join our team,” said CVS Caremark president and CEO Larry Merlo. “He has a broad range of business experience and legal expertise that make him a perfect fit as our executive vice president and general counsel. He is extremely knowledgeable about pharmacy health care and the health care business generally and is widely regarded as one of the most capable and experienced general counsels in corporate America.”

Moriarty succeeds Douglas Sgarro, who retired in May after more than 14 years with CVS Caremark. Moriarty will have responsibility for the company’s legal department. He will also be a member of the company’s executive committee.

Earlier in his career Moriarty worked at various positions in the office of general counsel at Merck & Co. He began his career at the law firm of Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander and Ferdon in New York.
