WOONSOCKET, R.I. — With the holiday season in full swing, CVS/pharmacy is offering consumers special savings if they get a flu vaccine at CVS or MinuteClinic.

The drug chain said Monday that customers will receive a 20%-off CVS/pharmacy Shopping Pass this holiday season when they get a flu shot at a CVS store or MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinic. The shopping pass can be used with CVS/pharmacy’s ExtraCare loyalty card to save 20% off nonpharmacy purchases up to $100.

The shopping discount is being offered as part of National Influenza Vaccination Week, which runs Dec. 8 to 14. The annual observance, established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is designed to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination through the holiday season and thereafter.

CVS added that members of its ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards program also will receive $5 in ExtraBucks Rewards when they get a flu vaccine at a CVS/pharmacy by Dec. 31.

"As people plan their family gatherings during this busy holiday season, we want them to remember that a flu shot will provide them and their loved ones the best protection available from getting sick with the flu," Papatya Tankut, vice president of pharmacy affairs for CVS/pharmacy, said in a statement. "While flu season is unpredictable, it typically peaks in January or later. In fact, last season’s national flu outbreak occurred right after the holidays, so this an ideal time to get vaccinated if you haven’t received your flu shot yet."

The shopping pass isn’t available in the states of Arkansas, New Jersey and New York and at MinuteClinic locations in Massachusetts, and the Pharmacy & Health ExtraBucks Rewards can’t be earned on flu shots given at MinuteClinic or in Arkansas, New Jersey and New York.
