NACDS ready to take Total Store Expo to the next level

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is not resting on its laurels when it comes to the 2014 Total Store Expo.

Despite the overwhelming success of the inaugural show last year in Las Vegas — as reflected by a 92% satisfaction rate among survey respondents and near sellout of this year’s booth space in Boston — NACDS is intent on fine-tuning the event.

“What people are looking for is change,” says senior vice president of member programs and services Jim Whitman. “The total store is always evolving. People now understand the thought process behind the initial conference — to explore the constant evolution of the total store so we could reflect not only what’s going on today but what’s possible tomorrow.”

To that end, this year’s expo — slated for August 23 to August 26 at the Boston Convention Center — will have the same strong elements as the 2013 event, with some tweaks. The Meet the Market program will again provide ample opportunity for meetings between and among front-end, pharmacy and supply chain executives as well as team discussions of such topics as health and wellness.

“That’s a real asset, because everyone wants to do so much more with their time,” Whitman says. “If we’re able to have a program on Saturday with multiple agendas, that’s a big plus.”

NACDS will build on Meet the Market with business programs and a new round of insight sessions addressing topical subjects and future concerns, including industry developments, new technologies, and federal and state regulations.

“We have the flexibility as we run these concurrent sessions to address multiple issues,” Whitman says.

The show floor will reflect the event’s consolidation of the old marketplace, pharmacy and supply chain conferences, he adds. “People are getting very comfortable with the idea that the total store really does incorporate all categories — both front end and pharmacy. It really does mean the store can be integrated.”

Booths will offer retailers and suppliers chances for conversations on the show floor on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, he adds.

The 2013 event saw the introduction of NACDS-TV, which captured the event through interviews, highlights and features offering new attendees a snapshot of the show. In the coming months, NACDS-TV coverage will build on the momentum from last year, including updates about what attendees can expect this year.
