OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. — Redbox Automated Retail plans to roll out automated redbox DVD rental kiosks at CVS/pharmacy locations nationwide.

The Coinstar Inc. subsidiary said Thursday that the deployment, which includes CVS stores in Puerto Rico and Longs Drug stores in Hawaii, is set to begin this quarter with about 700 installations by the end of 2010. The full rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

According to Redbox, the agreement — which follows a successful pilot program at select CVS locations — marks the first time that the pharmacy chain will offer a DVD rental service to consumers.

Each redbox kiosk holds 630 discs, representing up to 200 titles, including standard-definition DVDs and Blu-ray discs at select locations. Consumers use a touch screen to select their favorite movies, swipe a credit or debit card and retrieve their disc.

In addition, customers can visit www.redbox.com to select their movie online or via the redbox iPhone application and pick it up immediately at the redbox kiosk location of their choice.

"Redbox’s low nightly rate, rent and return anywhere policy, and online reservations offer a terrific value and convenience to consumers while increasing traffic for our retail partners," Redbox president Mitch Lowe said in a statement. "We’re pleased to add CVS/pharmacy stores to our list of convenient locations for movie lovers to rent films."

Redbox noted that the deal with CVS, which operates more than 7,100 drug stores across the country, significantly expands its presence within the drug store channel. The kiosk’s 23,000 U.S. locations include Walgreens and Walmart stores as well as supermarkets, convenience stores, McDonald’s restaurants and other venues.
