Rite Aid has acquired Health Dialog Services Corp., a Boston-based provider of health coaching, shared decision-making and health care analytics.

The drug chain said the acquisition will advance the Rite Aid Health Alliance, a new program in which health care professionals work as a care team to help people with chronic and polychronic conditions meet health improvement goals set by their doctors.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid Corp. has acquired Health Dialog Services Corp., a Boston-based provider of health coaching, shared decision-making and health care analytics.

Rite Aid said Tuesday that the acquisition of Health Dialog will advance its Health Alliance program, an initiative announced last month in which health care providers act as a health care team in delivering care and support to people with chronic and polychronic health conditions.

Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed. The drug chain acquired Health Dialog from Bupa, a London-based international health care group. Plans call for Health Dialog to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Rite Aid.

Health Dialog has been working closely with Rite Aid over the past year as the program has been developed, and it currently provides care coaches for the Rite Aid Health Alliance.

"We are extremely pleased to have Health Dialog become a part of the Rite Aid family and believe this strategic acquisition will be mutually beneficial to both companies," Rite Aid chairman and chief executive officer John Standley said in a statement. "This acquisition will provide Health Dialog with an expanded footprint to grow its existing business as well as further leverage the company’s coaching services expertise as we work to bring Rite Aid Health Alliance to more Rite Aid markets and customers."

Through the Rite Aid Health Alliance, which the drug chain calls a first-of-its-kind program in the drug store industry, patients with such conditions as congestive heart failure, high cholesterol and diabetes are recommended to the program by their primary care doctor. Rite Aid pharmacists and specially trained care coaches, located in Rite Aid pharmacies, work with the physician and patient on an ongoing basis to improve the patient’s overall health.

"We will benefit from Health Dialog’s industry-leading analytics and shared decision-making tools, helping us to better serve the health and wellness needs of our customers and further develop our pharmacy services as a growing retail health care company," Standley added.

Health Dialog‘s offerings include health coaching for medical decisions, chronic conditions and wellness; population analytic solutions; and consulting services.

"Rite Aid shares our vision of empowering people and delivering health-supporting behavior change programs, with the goal of improving the well-being of the individuals and communities we serve," stated Robert Mandel, CEO of Health Dialog Services. "We look forward to this new relationship and to an exciting future for Health Dialog as we work with Rite Aid to expand Rite Aid Health Alliance and pursue new opportunities to grow Health Dialog’s portfolio of clients and services."
