Walgreens enhances Rx savings program

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has developed what it says is an improved Prescription Savings Club program.

Executives say they hope the program will help address what the company sees as a growing problem. Some estimates, they note, show that as many as one in four adults in the United States don’t have sufficient prescription drug coverage, and consumers are increasingly looking for ways to drive down their health care costs.

“In today’s challenging economic and health care environment, Walgreens is focused on becoming a community health care provider to help people live well, stay well and get well,” president of pharmacy, health and wellness Kermit Crawford says. “Our Prescription Savings Club is an affordable solution for people who struggle to manage their prescription needs.
“Adequate prescription drug coverage is a significant issue for millions of Americans, and this program is one way we’re helping people get the medications and health care services they need.”

Prior to the upgrades to the program the Prescription Savings Club offered discounts on more than 8,000 medications, including about 400 generics. Under the new program, 300 additional generic drugs have been added to the discount list.

Walgreens pharmacy patients can purchase the generics for as low as $1 per week for a 90-day supply. Additional benefits of the program include discounts on services provided through Walgreens’ network of Take Care Clinics and on and most immunizations.

For pet owners, the program now offers discounts on select pet medications with a human equivalent.

At the front end, the program offers a 10% bonus on products offered under the Walgreens, W, and Nice! brands.

Executives note that the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club program currently saves members $170 per year, on average, and that nearly half (48%) of uninsured Americans in fair or poor health went without a prescription drug because of cost concerns in 2010.

Walgreens is offering annual membership in the savings club for $20 for an individual and $35 for a family. The club is open to those who are not enrolled in a publicly funded health care plan.
