Walgreens goes live with new social responsibility site

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has launched a redesigned social responsibility web site that it said will make it easier for socially-conscious consumers, investors and employees to find information about the company’s commitment to community, diversity, supplier diversity, disability inclusion and the environment.

Walgreens said Thursday that visitors to the web site, walgreens.com/responsibility, will find new articles, personal stories, videos and interactive features about the company’s benefits to the communities it serves.

The new site also showcases video clips about the the drug store chain’s health and wellness programs and spotlights new eco-friendly initiatives, including efforts to reduce plastic bag use, a cell phone and printer cartridge recycling program now at all stores, and a behind-the-scenes look at Walgreens’ participation in Earth Hour 2010 at New York City’s Times Square.

Others programs featured on the site include the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, expanded food centers in urban areas that have been designated as food deserts; a pilot program in Dallas aimed at hiring people with disabilities in stores; and the Community Corner program, which helps customers easily identify and purchase products produced by diverse companies.

"Walgreens is proud of its long history of commitment to communities," Chuck Greener, Walgreens’ vice president of corporate affairs and communications, said in a statement. "Visitors to the site will see how we take social responsibility to heart and also discover the many ways Walgreens and our customers help neighborhoods throughout the country."
