Walgreens names new chief medical officer

Dr. Kevin Ban will assume leadership of the Walgreens clinical office.

DEERFIELD, Ill.  – Walgreens announced Monday that Dr. Kevin Ban has become its new Chief Medical Officer (CMO). In his role as CMO, Dr. Ban is assuming leadership of the Walgreens clinical office, overseeing the development of enterprise clinical programs and clinical analytics and directing provision of care, clinical outcomes, patient safety and healthcare information systems and programs across pharmacy and operations.

Dr. Ban is also responsible for engaging with Walgreens network of health system and health service providers and payers in support of our healthcare programs and services. He will be collaborating with the Health Services team on strategic healthcare initiatives for Walgreens, while also working closely with the corporate development team as the company continues to explore healthcare innovation concepts for both Walgreens and WBA.

He joins Walgreens from athenahealth, where he most recently served as Chief Medical Officer, working with strategic clients, focusing on product development and leveraging technology among patients and providers to drive improved outcomes. As a practicing physician, Dr. Ban brings more than 20 years of clinical experience and leadership of innovative medical systems development and performance improvement.

Dr. Ban will work in close partnership with teams across Walgreens as the company continues to introduce new physical and digital healthcare services, both in-store and via the company’s digital channels including Walgreens.com, the Walgreens mobile app and the Walgreens Find Care™ platform which helps connect Walgreens mobile and online customers and patients to health care offerings and a growing selection of recognized health care providers.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ban has focused on working collaboratively with patients, healthcare providers and administrators to improve clinical outcomes through transformational change. He has expertise in medical systems development, practice and performance improvement and a passion for providing standardized patient centric-care.

Dr. Ban will be based at corporate headquarters in Deerfield, Ill. and will report to Gourlay. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in the Harvard-Affiliated Emergency Medicine Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
