DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has begun providing daily health testing for cholesterol, blood glucose and body composition at more than 60 drug stores in Maryland.

Walgreens said Monday that the tests are part of its effort to boost public access to preventive health care services. Each test also includes a free blood pressure reading and a personal consultation with a Walgreens pharmacist.

The fingerstick tests are adminstered by Walgreens pharmacists. The costs for each test are $35 for total cholesterol, $20 for blood glucose and $15 for body composition. Also being offered is a "wellness pack" for $65 that includes the cholesterol, glucose and body composition tests.

"Providing convenient, affordable access to health testing services is an important part of our commitment to disease prevention and chronic care management," Jon Reitz, market pharmacy director for Walgreens, said in a statement. "As the most accessible health care providers, our pharmacists are spending more time with patients through consultations, immunizations, medication questions or concerns, health testing and other important services to help our customers get, stay and live well."

The tests are available daily to adults at most stores during pharmacy hours, with no appointment necessary. The drug chain noted that the test results aren’t for diagnostic or treatment purposes and aren’t conclusive in terms of the absence or presence of any health condition. Customers are encouraged to share test results with their primary care doctor.

Overall, Walgreens offers health testing daily at more than 4,100 stores in 41 states.
