CHICAGO — Walgreens has opened a vision care center at its Magnificent Mile store in the Wrigley Building in Chicago.

The retailer believes vision care, combining health and fashion, has potential as an expanded offering as it strives to be America’s favorite pharmacy-led health, well-being and beauty retailer. The performance of the Chicago department will determine to what extent the concept will be rolled out around the country.

The Chicago debut fits with the growing interest in holistic health care, in which eye exams — in addition to checking vision — are important diagnostic tools for eye diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other conditions. Walgreens Optical’s services include adult and pediatric eye exams, and pre- and post-eye surgery care.

From the beauty perspective, the department’s fashionable eyewear offerings complement Walgreens’ established reputation as a source of quality beauty products.

Walgreens Optical offers virtual frame try-on, and all major brands of contact lenses, as well as prescription and nonprescription sunglasses. Eyewear options include thin and lightweight lenses as well as glare and scratch and UV protection.

Also, vision care customers can take advantage of the chain’s Balance Rewards loyalty program.
