DEERFIELD, Ill. — Two Alliance Boots executives were promoted in recent weeks to new positions with Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (WBA).

George Fairweather, formerly group finance director at Alliance Boots, was named WBA executive vice president and global chief financial officer. And Marco Pagni, who was Alliance Boots’ group legal counsel and chief administrative officer, was tabbed as WBA executive vice president and global chief legal and administrative officer.

Fairweather and Pagni are the latest Alliance Boots executives to move into top positions at the company created December 31 in the merger of Walgreen Co. and Bern, Switzerland-based Alliance Boots GmbH, launching what the partners are calling “the first global pharmacy-led health and well-being enterprise in the world.”

Fairweather assumes his new duties February 20. He replaces Tim McLevish, who in August was tapped to replace Wade Miquelon as Walgreens’ chief financial officer and then remain as CFO in the combined company. Instead, McLevish will serve as senior adviser for finance, integration and business development under the company’s chief executive officer. Former Alliance Boots chief Stefano Pessina is serving as acting CEO until a permanent chief is hired. Former Walgreens CEO Greg Wasson stepped aside once the merger was completed.

“My years of working and collaborating with George as he led Alliance Boots’ financial organization give me every confidence that he will step into the global role for Walgreens Boots Alliance smoothly and effectively as we move ahead with our vision to establish a new global leader for our industry,” Pessina said. “I also want to personally thank Tim for his outstanding leadership and service during this important transitional time. We are fortunate to have had two world-class CFOs at the company, and I sincerely appreciate the indispensable role Tim played to enable us to accelerate the close of the merger transaction before the end of 2014.”

Fairweather was group finance director at Alliance Boots since it was formed in 2006 via a merger with Alliance UniChem. Fairweather joined Alliance UniChem in 2002 as finance director and was instrumental in leading the financial integration following the merger with Boots Group.

Pagni will oversee all global legal affairs, including strategy and mergers and acquisitions, in concert with Pessina.

Pagni also arrived at Boots via Alliance UniChem. He began his tenure as general counsel and company secretary. He became Alliance Boots’ group legal counsel and chief administrative officer in 2007. He has also worked at McDonald’s Corp. and Texas Instruments Inc.
